Doodle Pantry - Berry Pie Set (Pre-Colored)
(inside)....doesn't get much sweet than that!

I notice I make more "food" cards when I'm hungry...lol  In this case, I was checking out my blueberry bushes in the backyard when the idea of making a card with a blueberry theme popped into my head.  And, remembering Doodle Pantry had a wonderful Berry Pie "Pre-Colored" set this month, I went to work. Laurie does such an awesome job on her pre-colored images and matching DP paper.

Dark Chocolate Butterscotch Brownies

To contact us Click HERE

Today is National Butterscotch Brownie Day. This recipe is not a traditional butterscotch brownie, which is more of a blondie, having no chocolate to it. But, frankly, I'll take any opportunity to write a recipe that includes both chocolate and butterscotch.
  • 1.3oz unsweetened chocolate, chopped
  • 1/4 C butter, cubed
  • 2/3 C sugar
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/3 C all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 C 60% cacao bittersweet chocolate baking chips
  • 1/2 C butterscotch chips
Glaze:
  • 1/3 C 60% cacao bittersweet chocolate baking chips
  • 1 Tbsp + 1 tsp butter, cubed
1. Prepare baking pan: line a loaf pan with non-stick foil. Preheat oven to 350°F.
2. In a microwave, melt unsweetened chocolate and butter; stir until smooth. Cool slightly. In a medium bowl, combine sugar and chocolate mixture. Stir in egg white and vanilla. Gradually add flour to chocolate mixture. Stir in chips.
3. Spread into prepared pan. Bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
4. For glaze, in a microwave, melt chips and butter; stir until smooth. Immediately spread over brownies. Cool before cutting.

Robyn's notes: Rich! This makes two large brownies and would probably make a good base for some vanilla ice cream. The photo above includes the glaze, so I'm also showing the brownies without glaze, as I know some people think it's not a brownie if it's frosted in any way. I used "non-stick foil", which is not regular aluminum foil. It's a more expensive version sold by the Reynolds company that doesn't stick to anything. I didn't test any other methods (greasing pan, regular foil, etc.) so I can't speak to how well they'd work, I can only say that there's a good amount of fat in the recipe and greasing the pan might mean too much. 3 stars instead of 4 because it really is so very rich that we won't be wanting it too often.

*** 3 Stars: Good. At least one of us liked this enough for me to make it again, but not often

How to Whip Cream

To contact us Click HERE

Take a look at the ingredients list of a package of whipped cream.  Don't have one nearby?  Here's what I found on the side of a tub of Cool Whip: water, corn syrup, hydrogenated vegetable oil, high fructose corn syrup, sodium caseinate, natural and artificial flavor, modified food starch, xanthan and guar gum, polysorbate 60, polysorbate 65, sorbitan monostearate, sodium hydroxide, beta carotene.  That's really not the slightest bit appetizing to me, and honestly I never have need of 8oz (more than 3 Cups) of whipped cream.  Interestingly, it takes less time to whip cream from scratch than it does to drive to the store and buy Cool Whip, assuming you have heavy cream in the house.
  • 1/2 C heavy cream
  • 2 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla
1.  About 10 minutes before you plan to start, place a whisk and a medium bowl in the freezer so that they'll be cold when you begin.2.  Pour cream into bowl and begin whisking as quickly as you can keep up with.  Be sure to rotate the bowl so that you access every bit of the cream.3.  As soon as you see the beginning of soft peaks forming (they'll look like wavy streaks), add the sugar and vanilla.  Continue whisking until soft peaks have formed, being careful not to overwhip.  The cream should hold its shape when dolloped onto something.

Yield: approx 1 Cup
Robyn's notes: It's best to use a bowl that's somewhat deep, instead of one with a wide mouth, and keep in mind that the cream will about double in size, so pick a bowl that can accommodate that.  I can't give estimates on how long to whisk each stage because I'm relatively weak from my health problems, so the speed at which I whisk may be completely different from what someone else would do.  Just watch for the strength of the peaks and it should be fine.  This should be used right away, but if it needs to be refrigerated for a couple hours, just give it another quick whisking before using, to re-incorporate it all.  When I'm making an ingredient that calls for cream, I buy it in a one-pint carton and get a package of strawberries or raspberries or similar at the same time.  Then, when I've used as much cream as I'll need for the recipe in question, I can whip up most of the rest of the carton into whipped cream and serve it on fruit (or even as part of a quick fruit shortcake).  If you're used to Cool Whip, real whipped cream may not be sweet enough for your taste, in which case feel free to increase the amount of sugar incrementally until it's the way you like it.

***** 5 Stars: Excellent. A favourite for both of us, I will make this repeatedly

Marshmallow Fondant

To contact us Click HERE

Since I recently had a birthday, this week we're doing the late celebration with my folks.  My mom has always been one to make special cakes in different shapes to match some event going on in life or the theme of the party.  When I was in the 8th grade, for example, my party was midnight bowling and then (after sending the boys home) a slumber party.  So the cake she made was a bowling ball striking a bowling pin.  When my sister was 25, my mom drove down to visit and made a campfire cake using sheets of melted hard candies shattered into flames, with marshmallows on skewers sticking up as if they were roasting.  This year she's making me a knitting-themed cake, and in brainstorming the best method it was decided that she would make a basket out of cake (frosted), and then round Rice Krispies Treats frosted to look like balls of yarn (she doesn't have and didn't want to buy any round cake pans and the other option was to put two cupcakes together and cut off the edges to make them round).  She will be frosting with buttercream, since I basically consider cake to be a vehicle for conveying frosting, but I decided to try and see if I could make marshmallow fondant work as another option.  I used ratios and instructions from about.com.
  • 1 C miniature marshmallows
  • 1/2 Tbsp water
  • food colouring
  • 1 C powdered (confectioner's) sugar
1. Dust your counter or a large cutting board with powdered sugar. Place the marshmallows and the water in a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minute, until the marshmallows are puffy and expanded.
2. Stir the marshmallows with a rubber spatula until they are melted and smooth. If some unmelted marshmallow pieces remain, return to the microwave for 30-45 seconds, until the marshmallow mixture is entirely smooth and free of lumps. If you want colored or flavored fondant, you can add several drops of food coloring or extracts at this point and stir until incorporated.
3. Add the powdered sugar and begin to stir with the spatula. Stir until the sugar begins to incorporate and it becomes impossible to stir anymore.
4. Scrape the marshmallow-sugar mixture out onto the prepared work surface. It will be sticky and lumpy, with lots of sugar that has not been incorporated yet--this is normal. Dust your hands with powdered sugar, and begin to knead the fondant mixture like bread dough, working the sugar into the marshmallow with your hands.
5. Continue to knead the fondant until it smooths out and loses its stickiness. Add more sugar if necessary, but stop adding sugar once it is smooth--too much sugar will make it stiff and difficult to work with. Once the fondant is a smooth ball, it is ready to be used. You can now roll it out, shape it, or wrap it in cling wrap to use later. Well-wrapped fondant can be stored in a cool room or in the refrigerator, and needs to be kneaded until supple before later use.

Robyn's notes: I did not end up incorporating all of the powdered sugar, and I didn't dust either my workspace or my hands with sugar, so I used a lot less sugar than this recipe instructed.  I was fairly nervous about it, but the fondant was the proper consistency, not sticky, and I didn't want to add more sugar unnecessarily and make the fondant crack.  I did lay down wax paper, and turned the bowl out onto that, there was enough unused sugar to keep my fondant from sticking to the wax paper.  This was really easy and definitely tastes better than store-bought fondant (ever tried it? it's nasty--like cardboard).  I was just making a test batch, so there's only one colour, if I'd made more colours I could add a stripe onto the cupcake, or a small flower, or whatever.  What's shown in the picture at the top of this post is almost the entire batch.  I pinched off and tasted about a half-inch ball before covering the cupcake.  Keep in mind that fondant is not meant to stick onto a cake on its own, if using it to frost something you'll need to put down a thin layer of another frosting (buttercream or whatever) as an adhesive, otherwise the fondant will just lift right off.

*** 3 Stars: Good. At least one of us liked this enough for me to make it again, but not often

My gifts from my beloved this year weren't food- or cooking-related, but we did my belated birthday celebration with my folks this week and the gifts from them were.  Here's the lovely selection of Le Creuset items in my favourite colour:

I love the petite casseroles (or mini round cocottes), and I'm working on some recipes specifically so that I can use them (definitely a creme brulee, possibly a little potato dish, not sure yet what else).

Spring has sprung and the hot days of summer are almost upon us.  I still have some lilies blooming which are gorgeous.  I will always remember my favorite "kodak moment".  My son Mitchell, who was only 2 at the time, bent over to smell a lily.  When he took his little nose out of the lily, straightened up and looked at me with the biggest smile ever, he had a blog of yellow pollen on the tip of his nose....that was a "Kodak moment"!  So dang sweet!!!

"What is that?" asked me, the city girl.
I seem to always have a memory/story behind each card.  Being a "city girl", I wasn't exposed to many critters from the foul family when I went to meet my new in-laws on their little farm.  I recognized the chickens and rooster immediately, but I saw strange little turkeys running around in their yard (free range...lol).  Anyhow, I was also unfamiliar with the strange sounds they made (patty wack - patty wack) and they seem to want to follow me.  My mouth seems to get me in more trouble than anything.  I spontaneously ask, "Hey, what's up with the strange turkeys?" They all bursted out laughing and when they were finally able to composed themselves, my husband turned to me and said, "My dear, those are not turkeys; they are guineas."  Now yal go "google" a guinea fowl and tell me that don't look like miniature turkeys!!!
Doodle Pantry has some wonderful "May Releases".  This darling chicken/hen is from the Quirky Rooster/Hen set.  It comes with B/W and Pre-colored images, along with DP and sentiments.  How cool is that!

Learning to Eat Less

To contact us Click HERE
I'm not a diet guru, or a doctor, or anyone of importance really. I have, however fought the seemingly never ending battle of the bulge. I tried many different diets through the years, and I believe I finally found something that works for me, that I can live with for the rest of my life. It may work for you, it may not. But if you are willing to try it, you might be surprised at how easily excess weight can be gone from your life forever.

We, as Americans, are so addicted to food. We eat often, we eat large, and if we happen to miss a meal we feel panicked and afraid, as if our bodies are going to give out the moment we don't eat. If we feel the slightest hunger pang, we feel we must instantly find something to satiate ourselves. Comfort ourselves. Feed ourselves.

We are trained early that we must eat three meals a day and add in a few snacks!  Are we still in grade school? Are our bodies still growing? As adults, we may still be growing in an outwardly direction, but I think our height progression has probably been attained! We don't need to eat to allow for growth, as we do when we were children.

As I've experimented with eating less I now believe we just eat way too MUCH food. We don't actually listen to our bodies anymore. If the clock says we must eat, then we do, whether we are actually hungry or not. If we're bored, we eat. If we're stressed we eat. We start out with a nice large breakfast, proceed to a substantial lunch to get us through to an even bigger last meal of the day! And don't forget that Snickers Bar we must have around 3 o'clock to give us energy! No wonder we are so fat!

Then we try to compensate for our excess eating by excess exercising, or by going on a restrictive diet with many rules that we can't possibly hope to maintain for a lifetime. Diets don't work because they are so complicated and unrealistic! Don't eat carbs, don't eat fats, don't eat sweets, only eat vegetables, measure this, drink that.. it's unending! There are so many diets and so many rules we begin to feel hopeless that we can ever master the vicious cycle of food and weight gain. Many diets tell you to eat 6 times a day and NEVER let your body feel hungry!  Does this even make sense? How is your body ever going to burn excess fat if you never let it? Diets don't make sense and take all the fun out of eating.

I remember feeling that I couldn't make the scale budge even one pound.. I was stuck... I was just going to have to accept being bigger and bigger every year.

Then I tried eating less. Plain and simple. No gimmicks, no diet wonder drug, no complex plan. Just eat less.

Now learning to eat less takes some time. We are so used to eating all the time, that eating less often is a new concept and not one we readily embrace. But the freedom you feel once you do is amazing. It is so simple. It's not hard. Whether by Intermittent fasting, or just cutting portion sizes, it doesn't matter. The goal it to decrease your total calorie intake in some way. Weight loss is the end result. Easily. Granted some days are easier than others, but keep the end goal in mind. I find it much easier than killing myself with exercise or following a strict diet regime.

Skipping meals here and there actually WON'T kill you. Allowing your body to actually FEEL hungry once in awhile not only re-tunes you to your body's cues but helps your body re-tune itself. In fact, if you look up Intermittent Fasting on the Internet you will find that science backs it up as a way to improve your overall health and add years to your life. I lost weight without ever counting calories and never measuring my food. I ate what I would normally eat, just less of it. Or I skipped a meal once in awhile. If I overate over the weekend, I fasted on Monday. If I knew I was going to eat a large dinner on Friday night, I ate lightly  or fasted during the day.Yes, I walked and moved my body. I continued to exercise because I LIKED to. Not because I HAD to.

Another way to eat less, is to quit eating just BEFORE you reach 100% fullness. This is a popular concept in Asian cultures, and it works for us here too. If you can't judge when you are ALMOST full, then just limit yourself to one serving. You are still eating the foods you love, just not a lot of it. Drink lots of water and when you are finished eating, get up and leave the table. Go for a walk. Get away from the temptation. Eventually you will find that food doesn't tempt you the way it used to. Food won't control you anymore.

It's just food. It's all food. Some food is certainly better for you, but it's all just food. Why let it dominate you? Once you break the cycle of continuous feeding, you will find a freedom in not HAVING to eat! Your body was designed to be very efficient and to burn fat when needed to provide the energy it needs. Doesn't it seem weird to keep putting gas in an engine that is overflowing already from too much fuel? If our bodies could talk to us, they would probably beg us to quit making it store so much excess fuel, increasing our risk of diabetes, metabolic syndrome and high blood pressure. Our bodies were made to use the fuel we store, not become a fuel reservoir. We are only damaging our bodies when we insist on packing in so much more than we need. You may think I never eat, but that's not true.  I eat everyday. Most days I eat several times, small meals with one larger meal in the evening with the family. Some days I skip breakfast and lunch and just eat dinner. I listen to my body's cues. Is is crying out for food? Is it not really hungry at all? Many times I may not eat breakfast until 11am or later. Sometimes I eat by 9am. Or maybe I'll wait until 2pm? I have no set rule, no set schedule. I listen to my body.

I don't rush to feed it the moment hunger hits. Sometimes I'll have a drink, something hot or my favorite iced beverage, and wait a few minutes, then see if I'm still hungry. When you are fasting, this is a great way to get through the day. Drink lots of water and enjoy your favorite calorie free beverages. Once you wrap your mind around the concept, it is much easier. You CAN do this, and actually come to enjoy it.

My light meals might not look like meals to some. I may have two scoops of crunchy peanut butter and an apple for lunch. Or half a sandwich and a few chips or a half glass of milk. Or maybe I just need a few animal crackers or a granola bar. You will be surprised at how little you really need to feel full, if you will just listen to your body. I eat small during the day, followed by a good meal in the evening. I do allow myself to eat larger meals on occasion, such as on holidays, weekends or celebrations. I eat cookies and ice cream just about every weekend. I don't worry about it because I know I'll eat small or fast during the week. You can eat more if you are maintaining, eat less if you want to lose. The healthier you eat, the faster the weight will come off, but never give up indulgences completely. What is life without cookies and ice cream? Or my favorite, peanut butter? Sometimes ice cream IS my lunch on the weekend, and my stomach and my sweet tooth are both completely satisfied.

If you have struggled with weight, I would recommend you try it, given that your doctor approves and you don't have any conflicting health issues. Find what works for you. Most people can do some form of eating less. Eating less leads to LESS weight for you!

Traditional Apple Pie

I made this pie this last weekend for a Pie Auction at church, and made a second one for us to eat at home! So yummy, you just can't get enough!

Butter Pie Crusts for 2 crust pie or Buttermilk Pie crust (see recipes under Pie Crusts)
8 cups peeled and sliced apples
2 TBSP lemon juice
3/4 cup white sugar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 TBSP butter
1 egg yolk
1 TBSP milk
sugar

In large bowl toss sliced apples with lemon juice

Combine sugars, flour and cinnamon. Sprinkle over apples and toss to coat.

Fill 9-inch pastry shell with apple mixture. Dot butter over apples.

Cover with second pastry, cutting a slit in top to vent steam. Pinch two crusts together and fold under to form nice thick crust if you like that sort of thing.. I do, or you can trim the crusts and seal with fork or fluted edges.

In small bowl, combine beaten egg yolk and milk. Brush over pie crust. Sprinkle top of crust with sugar. Place a cookie sheet under pie to catch any drips in oven.

Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Then turn oven down to 350 degrees and continue baking for another 45 minutes. Filling should bubble out of vent holes when done and crusts will be golden brown. Enjoy!

This is a delicious, flaky pie crust. Makes enough for two crusts.

2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup butter, chilled and diced
1/2 cup iced water

Combine flour and salt. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. Stir in just enough cold icy water one TBSP at a time until mixture forms a dough ball. Divide dough in half and wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate while you make filling for your pie, at least 30 minutes if possible. Dough can be refrigerated overnight, or frozen for later use.

Crockpot Lasagna

Simplify this satisfying meal by cooking it in the crockpot. No more boiling noodles and arranging in a casserole dish and baking. Just brown your meat, layer your ingredients and come back in a few hours and eat!

1 lb hamburger meat OR Italian Sausage (or half a pound of each)
1 medium onion, chopped
3 (15-oz.) cans Italian style tomato sauce OR spaghetti sauce of your choice
2 tsp. dried basil
1/2 tsp. salt
2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
1 (15 oz.) container Ricotta cheese
1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
15 uncooked lasagna noodles

Brown meat and onion in skillet, drain grease. Add tomato sauce or spaghetti sauce and basil  and salt. Mix well.

Mix 1 cup of the mozzarella cheese with the Ricotta and Parmesan cheeses. Refrigerate leftover 1 cup of mozzarella until lasagna finishes cooking.

Spoon 1/4 of meat mixture into bottom of 4-5 qt. crockpot. Top with 5 uncooked lasagna noodles, breaking them to fit into crockpot. Spread half the cheese mixture on top of the noodles. Then layer again, using 1/4 of the meat mixture, 5 noodles and half of the cheese mixture. Top with 1/4 of meat mixture, then 5 more noodles, then remaining meat mixture.

Allow to cook on low for 4-6 hours.

Sprinkle remaining 1 cup of mozzarella cheese on top and allow replace top of crockpot to allow cheese to melt, about 10 minutes.

Fast Before Feasting!

To contact us Click HERE
I have a big eating weekend coming up! We have a ballgame to go to, a birthday to celebrate AND it's Mother's Day weekend, so I know we'll be eating out at LEAST twice! I know for certain I'll be having peanuts at the ballgame, a pizza buffet, Ice Cream Cake,, another great meal and cookies, etc., and I plan to enjoy EVERY bite of it!

So today, even though my weight is at a happy place, I will fast two meals, in preparation for the big eating weekend.

Hopefully, by cutting calories before and after a big feast time, the actual damage will be minimal. Today is a better day to fast for me than tomorrow, as I actually need to run a lot of errands and be out of the house for a long period of time. So it's the perfect opportunity to take advantage of my hectic schedule to burn a few extra calories. Chewing gum helps. Drinking lots of fluids, preferably water, but it can be anything calorie FREE, also helps. The biggest help is making up your MIND to do it. Once you do that the rest is much easier.

Celebrate every hour! Fasting two meals is really not very long. Anyone can do it. I'm 7 hours away from dinner and I'm not even hungry yet! So, it will be a good day. On days that I fast that I do feel hungry right away, I find that once you get past that first hunger attack, your body settles down and your hunger disappears for the most part. You will however feel a little hungry, from time to time, but isn't that the point? You are forcing your body to get it's energy from your stored fat. Keep your end goal in mind. Remind yourself that you are burning fat, and you have plenty to spare. Imagine your body taking some of your fat and using it for energy. Let it!! Most of us have plenty of fat to carry us through a long hard winter!  Don't worry, you will refuel those storage tanks soon enough! There is always a reason to eat right around the corner, like this weekend for me.

Tomorrow I'll be back to eating smaller meals during the day. I don't fast everyday.  It is just an easy way to cut calories for your overall week, without having to count calories, exercise like crazy, or eat only rabbit food.

Forget-Me-Nots

Doodle Pantry has some awesome "new releases" this month, but don't forget about some wonderful oldies too.  Forget-Me-Nots has been "re-release" this month with pre-colored images.  I chose to color this time but I'm already working on a card with the pre-colored flowers.
I kept the layout simple by just layering and using pop-ups for dimension....hoping that it would still allow for the flowers to remain the focal point.

Dear Diary, I am most proud of my failures.

Fingers crossed.....Hopefully we will have an announcement soon!
I feel blessed to work in the craft industry! Not just because I get to make things (all the time) or that is perfectly acceptable to work in pj's all day with glitter on your face and Mod Podge on your clothes.

It is the artists, crafters and creative risk-takers that keep me inspired and keep me swinging my glittered baseball bat.  I love that the people are supportive and encouraging of each other.  I love that the people are authentic.  And, I love that the people respectfully learn from each other and grow with every brushstroke.

Last year, I did an interview with my publisher {{Lark Crafts}} about my Crafty Enthusiasm.  Yesterday, I stumbled across the interview and realized how much has changed in just one short year. One response in the interview really stands out to me..... I was asked "what I was most proud of in my crafting career" and I responded... "So many things! My TV show, my books, my product lines, my failures and my dare devil attitude towards crafting are all on the top of the list for things I am proud of. If I had to pinpoint one thing I am most proud of, it would be that I have always made a living being creative."

Did you see that?  I said I was most proud of my failures. LOL.  Sounds crazy - but it's true.  Failures mean that I am swinging my glittered bat.  I have been asked many times about my success and I just now realized that having an idea, believing and taking a swing is the key to my success and creative happiness.

Steve and I, have been swinging so hard this past year and I think we are going to the World Series.  I know that no one will ever really know how many misses and strikes we have had.  Or how many glitter tears were shed.  I can tell you we had many misses....but I am counting the home-runs and staying proud of the misses.

Our Home-Runs!
1. We have a line launching in Michaels this summer that I could not be more proud of.
2. A new show in development that would change food and crafts on TV.
3. The craft room is half organized.
4. A craft show we helped produce is coming to TLC this summer.
5. We stayed true to ourselves.
6. Hot Glue Gun Helpers are exploding at HSN and are being re-branded under Mod Podge.
7. We are developing ((two)) new top-secret lines for ((two)) major retailers.

Here is my formula....do what you love, believe in your ideas, take calculated risks, make cold calls, juggle well with a smile, say NEXT to the naysayers.....and be proud of your failures.

XO Cathie

p.s. I am off to find a bat to actually glitter and hang in the studio.

Springtime in Los Angeles is magnificent, especially so in my neighborhood. Our home is nestled at the base of Griffith Park in the equestrian district. It is the time of the year when the blooms are beginning to burst, the horses are out in full trout, and my allergies go haywire!

My side garden
I have a love/hate relationship with spring. It can be a tough time of the year for an avid gardener with a history of asthma and seasonal allergies (and the horse hay does not help.)
When I got the opportunity to test out a new product called Similasan Nasal Allergy Relief I was skeptically happy. I agreed to give it a shot and was soon sent some to try out.
I was excited that Similasan is one of the only medicated, preservative free nasal decongestants for nasal allergies available. I was concerned that it would not work on me in my neighborhood.

This is a homeopathic nasal mist for allergy relief. It stimulates the bodyís natural ability to relieve symptoms associated with nasal allergies. I guess that means with 3 puffs (I call them puffs) I will be relieved of my runny nose, itchy nose, congestion, and drippy nose...sounds gross, and if it works sounds like a miracle.

In the past I have suffered though this season without trying a mist because I had a friend who got addicted to one once, and she used it even when she did not have allergies. She had to wean herself from it. I really liked that this brand is non-habit forming....so to me that seems safer. Plus it is cleared for infant use!!I did a test for 3 days. The first day I took Max on a walk at the park without using the mist. On the way to the park I could begin to feel my allergies flare up. My nose twitched, and my eyes got watery. Max just kept skipping along. Back home, about an hour later, I was sneezing and had a runny nose.
The second day, I went on a walk at the same time and place. I could feel my allergies starting to flare so I tried the mist. It was a cool blast. I felt sort of silly doing it in the street but was pleasantly happy as my symptoms started to fade. Back home I did not get the normal sneezing fit.
The third day, Max was getting tired of the same walk, but we did it anyway for the sake of the test. This day I used the mist at home before the walk. As I approached my trigger area, to my surprise I did not feel the normal sensation in my eyes and nose, and I did not sneeze at all. I was shocked...it worked!I will defiantly keep this tucked into my purse for allergy season - for me that is Spring and Fall.If you want to try this, look for it at Walgreens and at online retailers as well. Similasan has a whole slew of natural products. Similasan products are all made to the highest quality standards in Switzerland and all use only 100% Natural active Ingredients. Sounds good to Max and me. Two thumbs up!!

I love Ruffles! DIY tutorial on a ruffle and corduroy pillow.... SEW easy!

Ruffles are all the rage - soft and sweet with tons of texture.  I designed this project after I fell in love with the grey baby whale corduroy {from Jo-Ann fabrics}.  I paired it with the vibrant yellow linen.  I whipped it up fast and even if you a beginner stitcher - I know you will have success with this pillow.

Gather This:1/2 yard fabric for pillow1/2 yard fabric for rufflesThreadZipperPillow Stuffing
Let's Get Stitching!
 Cut three pieces of the pillow fabric.1 front - 18"x18"1 backing - 6"x18"1 backing - 14"x18"
Place the two backing pieces right sides to right sides.  Pin to secure.  Position the zipper across the center.  Place double pins at the stop and start of the zipper.

Begin stitching with a regular straight stitch.  When you get to the first double pin, do a back-stitch and then sew a gather stitch (set your straight stitch on the longest setting) until you reach the second double pin.  Repeat the back-stitch to secure and continue with a regular stitch until you reach the end.

Open the seam and press the seam flat.  On the wrong side of the fabric, pin the zipper across the gather stitch area.

Using a zipper foot, sew the zipper in place.
Use a seam ripper to open the gather stitches and expose the zipper.

Cut your ruffle fabric into strips.  You will need one per ruffle.  {{I used two ruffles for this design}} My strips measured 4"x30" - you can make them as wide as you want.
Fold the strip over (right side together) sew down the side seam - this creates a tube.
Turn the tube right side out and press flat.  Using contrasting thread, sew a gather stitch down the center of the tube. (DON'T Back-stitch)  Pin across the pillow front fabric (non zipper piece).  As you pin determine the ruffle design that you like.  To create the ruffles you will just gently pull the threads.

Using matching thread, sew the ruffles to the front of the pillow.  Stitch as close to the gather stitch as possible without sewing over it.
Use a seam ripper to remove the gather stitch.
Open the zipper.  Place the two pieces right-sides to right-sides, sew around the outer edge.  Clip the corners.  Turn right-side out and stuff with a pillow form or stuffing.
  Enjoy!
Thanks for following along~ xo Cathie
